On the surface an employee giving campaign seems like a no brainer. As an organization, we tap into our employees’ desire to give back to the community. We provide a corporate match and as a result, we raise a bunch of money for people and charities that need it most. Sounds great, but unfortunately due to the set-up process, bandwidth or distracted employees, these campaigns often fall short.

Driving success in your employee giving or workplace giving campaigns comes down to (1) making it easy and compelling for a team member to engage, and (2) providing the right process that’s efficient on the back-end. You may be able to make it easy for the employee to give, but if the process to track the donation and provide the corporate match is tedious – results will still fall flat.

Your campaign will be much more successful if you’re able to connect with your employees on the devices they use every day. Here’s why:

  • You can send them push notifications and messages encouraging participation.
  • They can easily leverage social integration and promote the cause with their colleagues.

Providing choice to the donor can also help encourage participation. It removes the idea of being “forced” to support a particular organization, when the employee may have a compelling reason to give funds to another. When you draft mobile into your fundraising campaign, make sure you account for how the app can provide choice to the donor.

Your employee giving campaign also needs to be easy and seamless on the backend. There are a lot of organizations that may be using mobile interfaces, but the reporting is so cumbersome that it negates any benefit to the campaign. Technology can be a great tool that increases participation and helps raise more money; however, make sure your technology platform has the rigor to drive efficiency, including:

  • Easy to use tracking that ensures the donations reach the right organizations.
  • Reporting to measure campaign goals.
  • Documentation that allows for effective tax reporting and accounting.
